Castlio Hosts “Lunch N Learn” for Parents

All Francis Howell School District (FHSD) schools want their teachers to be the best they can possibly be. After all, educating students is their top priority. But what about parents? Are schools doing what they can to make sure that parents have all they need to help their child succeed? Castlio Elementary, part of FHSD, is doing just that, by hosting “Lunch N Learn” for Parents.

“Castlio has been hosting ‘Lunch N Learn’ for our teachers for the past few years,” said Dr. Bridgett Niedringhaus, the principal at Castlio. “This year Ann Bender and I came together to offer the same concept to our parents. Parents could sign up for a time during lunch or after school to come into the Learning Commons and learn about tech tools available for families to access from home.”

Ann Bender is the library media specialist at Castlio who was instrumental in this project. “Castlio is able to offer online resources that expand learning opportunities for our students beyond the school day,” said Bender. “Students have access to databases, eBooks, and subscription services that are available 24/7. We wanted to give parents an opportunity to see the variety of online tools that their children might be using, so they can feel more comfortable supporting learning at home.”

And parents certainly appreciated the opportunity to pick up skills that will help their children succeed. Survey results from the “Lunch N Learn” exemplified their gratefulness. “This is a great introduction for parents,” said one parent in the survey. “Now I'll understand what my child is talking about and be able to help encourage exploration of any gaps or new opportunities.”

FHSD continues to engage the community by offering Community Education classes, and last month the District hosted the inaugural Parent University (click this link to watch a video). Castlio is helping reach out to parents at the school level, as well, with these types of efforts. “The session has been very helpful,” said another parent. “It was informative and inspiring to know that the school is taking the time to educate parents.”
